The Cox Scholarship has provided me with an incredible opportunity to feel deeply connected to the community I’ve called home for the past few years. I am grateful for the chance to learn, grow, and contribute to a field beyond my academic interests, all while honoring the legacy of Jesse and Beulah Cox.
Tell us about your work placement experience.
Heading Home is a community-wide collaboration dedicated to strengthening housing security and decreasing homelessness in this region. As an intern for Heading Home, I have supported a variety of projects, including updating resources for our community, organizing collaborative events with IU organizations, conducting research for community initiatives, and assisting with social media and marketing related materials. The tasks I have taken on during my time at Heading Home have pushed me outside my comfort zone and allowed me to grow immensely in my research, writing, communication, and interpersonal skills.
What is something you have learned through your work?
My time at Heading Home has opened my eyes to the complexities surrounding housing insecurity and homelessness, as well as shifted my perspective on those facing these challenges. It has been inspiring to witness all the dedicated individuals who are working every day to address these problems in our community. I have enjoyed meeting many of these professionals and learn about all of the resources Monroe County has to offer. This experience has given me a new perspective that goes beyond what I am able to learn as a Human Biology major, and I’m very grateful to have this invaluable opportunity.
How will being a part of the Cox Scholars Program help you in the future?
Thanks to Jesse and Beulah Cox and the Cox Scholars Program, I have been able to focus on my academics while also growing personally and professionally through my work placement. The Cox program has helped me become a more well-rounded individual by providing meaningful opportunities to develop real-world skills alongside my studies. I am deeply grateful for the financial stability that this scholarship has provided, as it allowed me to pursue opportunities such as studying abroad and Physician Assistant school.
What is your favorite memory as a Cox Scholar?
Some of my favorite memories as a Cox Scholar come from moments spent connecting with my peers. The Cox Program offers many fun and engaging opportunities, including bowling, cohort dinners, tickets to IU shows, and themed meetings. I have enjoyed building relationships with one another over the years and learning about our placements and the Bloomington community in the process.
What do you do outside of the Cox Scholars Program?
Aside from my work with Heading Home and my academics, I really enjoy spending time with friends, staying active, and reading a good book. Some of my favorite activities include pickle ball, running, and volleyball. I have also always had a passion for healthcare and helping others, so I enjoy both my jobs as a home health aide and a patient care technician as well.
