I used to think getting into Cox was just luck, but being part of the Cox program has shown me that I truly earned this opportunity — one rooted in work, community, and education.

Tell us about your work placement experience.

As an Advocate for Community Engagement at Head Start, I facilitate service learners through orientation and placement within Head Start classrooms. I also foster partnerships with Indiana University Bloomington courses to enhance student involvement and strengthen community collaboration. In this role, I have developed strong communication and managerial skills by serving as a liaison between the agency, service learners, and professors.

What is something you have learned through your work?

Being part of the Cox Scholars Program is helping me grow into the kind of leader I hope to become — someone who can balance responsibility, service, and compassion within an organization. Through the program’s work component, I’ve learned how to manage my time, communicate effectively, and stay accountable to both my work and my goals. The community aspect has shown me the importance of giving back and staying connected to those who support you, which I hope to carry into my future in business administration or law.

How will being a part of the Cox Scholars Program help you in the future?

Being a Cox Scholar has truly been a blessing! It has allowed me to focus on my education without worrying about the added stress of life. For the first time in a long time, I feel like I have a support system to rely on and a group of people that want the best for me. The staff is filled with genuinely passionate individuals that care about the students. I hope to one day pay it forward and allow someone else to experience this gift.

What is your favorite memory as a Cox Scholar?

My favorite memory as a Cox Scholar was assisting with Camp Cox. I really enjoyed helping set up the activities for the incoming first-year scholars and seeing how excited they were to start their journey. It reminded me of when I first joined the program and how much I’ve grown since then. Being able to welcome the new cohort and help create a positive first experience made me feel proud to give back to the community that has supported me.

What do you do outside of the Cox Scholars Program?

Outside of the Cox Scholars Program, I enjoy spending time at local cafés with a good book, listening to music, exploring photography, and spending time with my family.
