As a non-traditional student, having accessible opportunities has completely changed my life! Jesse and Beulah Cox’s generosity has inspired me to use my education for the greater good and to give back to my community.
Tell us about your work placement experience.
As the President/Executive Director for Beyond the Chair, I wear many hats. I oversee day-to-day operations, financial and social media management, fundraising, program development, and staff leadership, while ensuring the organization's mission advances. I enjoy working with our amazing board of directors and learning about the needs and desires of beauty and grooming professionals nationwide.
What is something you have learned through your work?
Work-life balance—and school-life balance—is VERY important. Listening to your body is vital to avoiding burnout. Do not take on more than you can handle. But if you do, ask for help. Help is always out there; you just have to be brave enough to ask for it.
How will being a part of the Cox Scholars Program help you in the future?
Being a Cox Scholar is providing me with opportunities to shape my future in the way I see fit. It has enabled me with leadership and education opportunities that would have otherwise been inaccessible.
What is your favorite memory as a Cox Scholar?
My favorite memory as a Cox Scholar has been the cohort dinners. I have always loved dining at the different restaurants in Bloomington with my fellow Cox Access Scholars. When we can get together and catch up with each other is very special.
What do you do outside of the Cox Scholars Program?
Outside of the Cox Scholars Program, I am a loving girlfriend, fierce plant and pet mom, and occasional roller-skater. I love long walks around campus in the morning, visiting the museum between classes, and enjoying quiet evenings at home, either reading or watching a movie.
