Jesse and Beulah Cox’s incredible generosity has not only helped me but also inspired me to give back to my community. Their legacy encourages us scholars to create a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and feel a sense of belonging.
Tell us about your work placement experience.
As a project manager in Economic & Sustainable Development, I focus on supporting the arts in Bloomington. I've developed strong communication and management skills that help me work closely with local artists and community members. I regularly attend art events, and my goal is to keep Bloomington’s arts scene growing, while also making sure both artists and the community continue to thrive.
What is something you have learned through your work?
I've learned about the trials and tribulations of project management, from the early discontinuation of a project outline to the holistic debrief after a successful launch. Projects can take lots of time, but the most important aspects of a project are deadlines and oversight. Staying on track and constantly updating a project map/plan almost always ensures a project finish line.
How will being a part of the Cox Scholars Program help you in the future?
This experience has strengthened my passion for community involvement and continues to inspire me to give back. Through this scholarship, I have been able to focus on school and work instead of worrying about financial hardships. In the future, I hope to take all the experience I am gaining here at IU and apply it to my career and service within my community.
What is your favorite memory as a Cox Scholar?
My favorite memory has been getting to know everyone within my cohort. Everyone offers a unique experience and background, which makes our seminars engaging and inspiring.
What do you do outside of the Cox Scholars Program?
I love to hike at local state parks and stay active outside. I also enjoy drawing and rendering 3D models in my spare time.
